Pastoral Organisation
With over 1,300 children on roll, it is important to ensure that each child is well known as an individual and always has
someone to turn to if in difficulty or doubt.
Form Tutors
When pupils enter the school they are put in forms under the guidance of a form tutor. This tutor meets the class at least
twice a day. He or she often stays with that same group of pupils for a number of years and may accompany the children
throughout their entire time here. It is the form tutor who leads the Skills for Life programme, takes an interest in the
well-being and progress of individuals and provides one-to-one mentoring at least on a termly basis.
The form tutor plays a key role in the pastoral care of each pupil and is often best placed to discuss your child’s
personal problems with you. S/he is also there to praise and record any particular success or achievement.
Year Heads
There are five year heads, each with the responsibility for a specific year group of approximately 270 pupils. The year
head co-ordinates the work of the form tutors and deals with major pastoral problems and disciplinary matters. Pressing
concerns should, in the first instance, be addressed to the relevant year head. Many problems can be dealt with by
telephone or letter, but parents who feel that an interview would be helpful are asked to make an appointment. A list of
the year heads is found in Appendix 3. There are also four Pastoral Assistant who deal with matters of uniform and attendance.
Conduct
Importance is attached to high standards of conduct and the need for people to work together. We endeavour to have as
few school rules as possible, the guiding principles being common sense, courtesy and a concern for the welfare and safety
of others. These rules are set out in our ‘Code of Conduct’, copies of which are posted in every form room and are in the
pupil organisers.
Problems and Difficulties
A pupil who has a problem while in school should first consult the form tutor or year head, or if necessary, one of the
senior staff.
The House System
Each pupil is placed in one of the four houses: Ardeley; Causton; Drakes; or Tyms. The house system is used to facilitate
many social and extra-curricular activities such as sports and quizzes.
